RAPPRESENTATIONE DI ANIMA, ET DI CORPO (Representation of the Soul and Body)

Wed 14th – Thu 15th Mar 2012

“A unique opportunity to see the first ever opera”

Béla Bollabás

A unique opportunity to see the first ever opera, in an exciting, accessible production with a musical arrangement of groundbreaking authenticity.

Anima (Soul) and Corpo (Body) are determined to resist earthly temptation and dedicate themselves to a holy life. They encounter a succession of corrupting influences, intent on derailing their resolve: Pleasure, her Acolytes, Worldly Life and the World himself. Under the fearsome supervision of their Guardian Angel, Anima and Corpo are given a glimpse of the eternity that awaits them… in

Heaven or in Hell.

After ecstatic audience responses in Santa Maria dei Miracoli, Venice, last summer, Professor Béla Bollabás is transferring Lewis Reynolds’ production of this historic opera to Cambridge.

The cast consists of professionals from the original production alongside students selected from the cream of the University’s musical elite.

They will perform under the direction of Philip Thorby, one of the world’s most distinguished exponents of Renaissance and Baroque Music, Professor at Trinity Laban and creator of the modern edition of this extraordinary work.

A continuo of authentic instruments will include Jennifer Bennett, violin and David Hatcher, bass viol, who will improvise melodies around the vocal lines as described in original sources, for the first time in the UK.

Director Lewis Reynolds, of the Royal Opera House, Welsh National Opera, Arcola Theatre, Bristol Hippodrome and King’s Head Theatre returns to recreate a production which so enchanted Venetian audiences.

Sung in Italian with English translation.

Admission: £10(£5)
