SUMMARY

Oreste loves Hermione who loves Pyrrhus who loves his captive Andromaque, who is torn between her fidelity to her late husband Hector, killed by Pyrrhus’ father, Achilles, at the end of the Trojan War, and her attempt to save their son. Although promised to Hermione, Pyrrhus pushes Andromaque to marriage. Hermione, betrayed, offers her heart to Oreste in exchange for Pyrrhus’ death. When Oreste returns after the assassination, Hermione wildly rejects him and commits suicide over Pyrrhus’ body. Oreste is driven to madness.
