SUMMARY

Popular culture in 1960s America was obsessed with its own transience. Musicians in particular talked and sang about being on the road, being rootless, travelling, finding themselves, losing themselves, escaping the world through drugs and discovering it again on long pilgrimages. The world was still reeling from war; life was fragile, friends died; Janis Joplin advised her listeners, ‘Get It While You Can’. Yet, at the same time, records were being made that rocked the whole world, and rock and roll legends were being established.

Today we can see the aftermath of this transience in the rise and fall in favour of modern celebrities. Girl From Nowhere traces this abstraction back, before the days of mass media and the PR machine, and finds out how this transience and fragility might manifest itself in a young musician trying, precariously, to establish herself as one of these rock and roll legends, and dealing with life cut brutally short.
