SUMMARY

Noël Coward's 1941 hit comedy Blithe Spirit features socialite and novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife Ruth who are literally haunted by a past relationship when Madam Arcarti, an eccentric medium manages to summon up the ghost of Charles's neurotic first wife, Elvira, at a séance.

Charles assumes that the preposterous clairvoyant will simply entertain their dinner guests with a little jiggery-pokery and provide him with useful material for his next novel. Following the séance, the annoying and temperamental Elvira makes a dramatic appearance, but unfortunately only Charles can see her. Determined to sabotage his current marriage, Elvira’s increasingly desperate efforts to get Charles to join her in the afterlife are the subject of an hilarious battle of wills between all concerned.
